On July 12, 1728, the Spain became the first country to standardize the swords of its cavalry officers by order of the king. He specified a slim cutting and thrusting sword with a straight, double-edged blade. The hilt consisted of an S-shaped crossguard, a knuckle bow and finger guards, and a shell-shaped basket. This successful model was used for several decades, but was replaced by a completely new one in 1796.

Our sword is a replica of the one the Spanish heavy cavalry used starting in 1796. Several example are exhibited in the Museu Militar in Barcelona and other museums. Hand forged of 1095 carbon steel, it has almost the same features as the previous model, but the hilt is more typical of a rapier. The basket is larger, asymmetrical and elegantly curved, and it is bolted to the finger guards below it. The pommel is round and the grip is made of hardwood wrapped with hammered, twisted wire.
