When the Lombard League evaluated its chances, it forgot to count Frederick II in. The cities in northern Italian Lombardy officially belonged to the Holy Roman Empire, but had not been happy with the emperor for decades. They had been able to assert their sovereignty over the predecessors of Frederick II, but probably went too far when they blocked the emperor's troops from coming through on their way to the Holy Land and refused to recognize his rights a few years later. In 1237, he fought the decisive Battle of Cortenuova that ended in ignoble defeat for the Italians.

Our Cortenuova sword was designed with this epoch and the illustrations of that historic battle in mind. The wide steel blade with an equally wide fuller is well balanced by the brass hilt. In conjunction with the leather-wrapped wooden grip, the riveted, type I wheel pommel and convex crossguard create a simple but elegant unit.

Our Cortenuova sword comes with a black leather scabbard with a mount and chape.
