Note

This delicate rapier was recreated from a historical catalog drawing. The prototype presumably originated in the Bohemian city of Plzeň. Particularly striking is the basket construction – the quillons, knuckle guard and ribs swing around into a crown knot at the ricasso.

In contrast to the elaborate shape of the basket, the crossguard, grip and pommel are rather simple – a single, fine braided counter-guard between the grip and pommel neck creates a handsome accent. The crossguard is designed like a sword's, and the leather wrapped grip of wood tapers at the pommel like a bottleneck.

With its long, narrow blade, the Bohemian rapier is a flexible thrust weapon, whereas for blows it is very limited. Civilians especially carried these blades in the 16th and 17th centuries as a status symbol, for self defense and for dueling.

The included leather scabbard features a wide, richly decorated chape and throat in floral pattern.
