The prototype of this falchion is located in the Bargello museum in Florence and dates to the first quarter of the 16th century.

With its straight, single-edged parallel blade with a false edge and two fullers, the falchion was very popular during the transition from the Late Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The blade is primarily designed for chopping cuts: it has an S-shaped crossguard with a perpendicular third quillon ("nagel") for protecting fingers when they grip the ricasso. The fan-shaped pommel is swept toward the edge side, resulting in a hat shape. The grip is made of polished hardwood, and the pommel, crossguard, and third quillon are made of steel. The mount and chape of this Renaissance falchion's scabbard are also made of steel.
