The edged weapon that accompanied all seafarers as of the 16th century was known as a cutlass. The word comes from the Middle French word "coutelace" or Italian "coltellaccio," which both mean "large knife." And this short sword was actually nothing more than a large knife with a single-edged blade and basket-shaped guard that was easy to learn to handle and suitable for use in the close quarters of ships or in thick undergrowth. At some point, the South Americans eliminated the guard and turned the cutlass into a machete.

Of course our cutlass has a hand guard. It features a sweeping form and an openwork basket, but its elegance does not hinder its deadly purpose. The steel basket was there to guard the sword-user's hand from enemy blades and could be used as an "iron fist" for punching in moments when there was no room to wind back for a saber cut. The decorative pommel is riveted and the hardwood grip is wrapped with black leather.

Our cutlass comes with a leather scabbard.
