This changed literally overnight in the fateful Battle of Hattin. In 1887 thanks to clever tactics, the legendary Sultan Saladin's troops crushed the Christian army, winning back dozens of Christian states and strongholds, including Jerusalem. Balian of Ibelin was one of the few Christian nobles who survived the Battle of Hattin. Already immortalized in a Hollywood epic film, the baron of Jerusalem served as inspiration for our Battle of Hattin sword.

With a fuller at 66 cm long and cross-shaped decoration, this Battle of Hattin sword is a typical crusader bastard sword. A translucent red cross is embedded in the octagonal pommel. "MXCIX - DEUS LO VULT" is engraved around the cross which are Latin for the year 1099 when Jerusalem was conquered and the crusaders' motto: God wills it.

Particularly striking is the grip with its combination of solid wood, leather and braided accents of brass wire. Plated with .925 sterling silver, the cross-guard and pommel are embellished with detailed lion heads.

A wooden wall mount painted black and silver with cross motif is a wonderful way to display this impressive bastard sword.
