A foamed weapon or larp weapon - what exactly is that?
Larp weapons are weapons that are mainly used for live role-playing games. Padded weapons are also used in martial arts, but this is not our topic. Our padded weapons usually consist of a fiberglass core covered with foam. Larp fights are usually not arranged and the opponents try to really hit their rivals. Larp weapons are for the most part used for close combat if not even infights, i.e. foamed swords, axes, mace, sabres, spears etc.. The range is huge. Also because of the strong fantasy element in the Larp new creations and designs are added constantly. In addition, there are
padded arrows for bows and crossbows as a special case among the Larp weapons.
Building padded weapons - How are Larp weapons made?
The backbone of many Larp weapons is the core. Fiberglass is used almost exclusively for this. This has among other things the property to be quite resistant and nevertheless flexible, which is of course a great thing. The second main component is foam. It is used in various compositions, strengths and hardnesses. Every manufacturer or hobbyist prefers different foams, depending on their philosophy. So cushion weapons can turn out very differently, depending on e.g. which core rod is combined with which kind of foam. These two factors of an upholstered weapon are decisive in determining how heavy, hard or flexible a Larp weapon is. These two main components have actually all foamed weapons in common. However, there are 2 fundamentally different ways of construction:
1. Sandwich construction of Larp weapons
This means roughly that foam boards are cut to size and glued in layers around a core bar. These are then shaped and coated with several layers of latex, then painted and varnished. The advantage of this construction is that anyone can do it at home and, with a little talent and practice, build quite usable padded weapons.
2. Foamed Larp weapons
Here liquid foam is poured or "foamed" around a core. usually in a mould. Since the result of the moulds no longer has open pores, foamed weapons are very rarely coated with latex layers, but varnished after painting. The advantage of this method is a fast and in contrast to the conventional construction method, relatively cheap production, the result also appears much more realistic. This method is mostly used by professional larp weapon manufacturers.
