The lion rampant has been the flag and coat of arms of Scottish kings since the reign of William I in the 13th century. The red lion standing on its hind legs on a golden background enclosed by a double line dotted with red fleur de lis was also added to the United Kingdom's coat of arms in 1603. Actually, according to a law of the parliament of Scotland adopted in 1672, this flag can only be used by the king and his official representatives. but the Crown does not actively seek to uphold this law...
